Variegated Yucca

Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard'

Needle Palm; Weak-leaf Yucca

About This Plant

Evergreen, with bright yellow-green foliage. Tall white flower stalks appear in late spring. Yucca filamentosa is native to the eastern U.S. coastline, but the variegated ‘Color Guard’ was developed by Japanese growers. The soft leaves can be used around pedestrians and children without worry, since they don’t have stiff spines. Although it is a yucca, it does not necessarily love full South Texas scorch; many gardeners use it in shade.

Origins: Southeastern U.S.

Maintenance

Avoid wet feet and over-watering: this yucca is native to dry sandy soils. Provide excellent drainage, especially in heavy clay. Flower stalks can be removed after blooming.

A soft commercial yucca, used for brightening up shade.
