Sierra Madre Torchwood

Amyris madrensis

Sierra Madre Torchwood

About This Plant

Understory shade or sun. Evergreen, with compound leaves and crinkled, glossy leaflets smelling intensely of citrus or rue. Torchwood is densely branched and hedge-like, providing an attractive, drought-hardy selection where an evergreen shrub is needed. The wood ignites easily, hence the name. Black fruits appear in autumn. Torchwoods are not widely available; find them at specialty native nurseries, including in Austin and South Texas.

Origins: Sierra Madre Occidental and northern Mexico

Maintenance

None required; on its own it forms a dense shrublike shape.
