Sandankwa Viburnum

Viburnum suspensum

Sandankwa Viburnum

About This Plant

Partial shade; can grow under live oaks as long as soils are deep enough. Evergreen. Sandankwa is a fairly fast growing shrub up to 8 feet tall and wide. It can be planted on 3- or 4-foot centers for a woodland hedge effect, and grouped with contrasting textures and perennials to add visual interest. It’s dense enough to hide unattractive views, and frequently used for this purpose in commercial landscaping. In the home landscape it’s big enough to require some room. The leaves give off a pungent, mulch-like odor when crushed.

Origins: Okinawa

Maintenance

Not particularly tolerant of extreme drought, so use with caution in western exposures; it can get by better with some shade. Selective occasional pruning helps to maintain a pleasing informal hedge of 6-8 feet.
