Retama

Parkinsonia aculeata

Paloverde, Girasol, Jerusalem Thorn

About This Plant

Full sun; deciduous and fast-growing, with abundant thorns, ribbon-like leaves and yellow paloverde flowers in spring (and occasionally throughout the warm season). Retama has the ability to shed its leaves during severe drought, continuing photosynthesis using its green bark. Retama is an early pioneer in plant succession, quickly appearing in any overgrown field or newly cleared land. Many are only familiar with it as thorny brush, but if allowed to mature it makes a nice shade for walkways and patios.
