About This Plant

Sun/partial shade; deciduous, with unarmed branches. Possumhaw resembles its cousin, yaupon holly, but grows larger; the leaves are larger and more paddle-shaped. It’s admired for the female’s red fruit, which festoon the leafless winter branches. Possumhaw attracts fruit-eating birds.

Origins: Southeastern U.S.; Chihuahua and Coahuila, Mexico

Maintenance

None needed. Normally shrublike with multiple trunks, but can be trained and pruned to various forms.

Spectacular red berries on bare winter stems.
