Part shade/shade. Inland sea oats is a perennial bunchgrass with drooping wheat-like seed heads that lend an ornamental quality. It attracts seed-eating birds and other wildlife to the garden.
Sea oat tolerates shade and poor drainage. As long as there’s sufficient soil moisture (clay soils especially) it’s excellent for massing in wildscapes and woodland edges. See it growing in parks, greenways, along creeks and rivers, and in any shaded lowland.
