Partial sun or bright shade. Salvia guaranitica is a big, clumping sage that spreads by the roots in shade, especially when watered; give it room and contain as needed. Big blue flowers appear throughout the warm season, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.
‘Black-and-Blue’ is a popular cultivar.
Expect salvia guaranitica to spread by the roots, especially when watered heavily. Cut back during winter if the above-ground foliage freezes. At other times of year, cut back by a third to control size.
