Firecracker Plant

Russelia equisetiformis

Coral Plant, Coral Blow, Coral Fountain

About This Plant

Full to morning sun or partial shade. A fine-textured, sagelike perennial with showy cascades of slender, bell-shaped red flowers. (Yellowish cultivars are available.) Blooms appear from spring through first frost. The horsetail in the Latin name references the plant’s superficial resemblance to horse-tail fern. In South Texas, Russelia will probably freeze back in winter unless protected. It attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.
