Esperanza

Tecoma stans

Yellow Bells, Trumpet Bush, Yellow Elder

About This Plant

Full scorching summer sun (esperanza won’t bloom as well in shade). Few ornamental shrubs can outperform esperanza in south-central Texas; clusters of yellow, orange, or red trumpet flowers barrel all the way through the summer with or without rain or drought. If winters stay warm enough for a few years, esperanza can grow into a very large shrub or small tree; however, hard freezes usually take it back down to the roots. Like bougainvillea, esperanza provides a drought-proof tropical effect.

Origins: Tropical Americas

Maintenance

Light shaping to control size. Trim back as needed; it can be cut back in winter, especially after freeze damage.

Big yellow bouquets all season long. One of the hardiest -- and loveliest -- West Texas native shrubs.
