Dayflower

Commelina erecta

Dayflower, Widow's tears

About This Plant

Mounding perennial with soft stems up to 3 feet tall if supported by other material. Small sky-blue flowers appear in the spring, summer, and fall when temperatures and moisture allow. This is a common plant in shady areas throughout Bexar County including parks and lawns. While often overlooked, it has wildlife benefits: bees pollinate the flowers and granivorous birds eat the seeds. Consider protecting plants that may volunteer in your own landscape. Dayflower isn’t commonly sold in nurseries, but it often pops up on its own in unoccupied garden pots.

Origins: Much of the Eastern U.S. west to Arizona and Colorado
