Cow’s Tongue Prickly Pear

Opuntia engelmannii linguiformis

Cow's Tongue, Cow Tongue Cactus, Lengua de vaca; Nopal

About This Plant

Sun. Evergreen. Cow’s tongue is a prickly pear with 4-foot pads that reach upward like long curling fingers: a striking otherworldly specimen in any landscape. The yellow blooms and tuna fruits are similar to other prickly pears. Cow’s tongue can be easily propagated by breaking off and re-rooting the pads.

Origins: South-Central Texas

Maintenance

Like any prickly pear, Cow’s Tongue eventually grows large; give it room. Thorny pads make cutting back a chore, even with heavy gloves.

A unique prickly pear: spiny pads look like a cow's tongue after a mouthful of cactus.
