About This Plant

Dappled shade. Semi-evergreen, with an airy structure, long glossy leaves and reddish fruits in autumn. Normally, Carolina buckthorn is seen as a small shrub in wooded understory, but in full sun it can reach 15 feet or more in height and 15 feet in width. Despite the name, Carolina buckthorn is thornless.

Origins: Eastern U.S.

Maintenance

None typically needed. Prune only to remove crossing branches, never removing more than the lowest third in any four-year cycle.

A pretty understory native, best grown beneath large shade trees.
