Sun. Blue grama is a bunchgrass with thin leaves and a plush texture; it tends to grow in clumps. The large seedheads are suspended horizontally from the stems; these may rise up to a foot for an attractive display, especially in autumn.
Fully grown blue grama is even more drought-tolerant than buffalograss. It’s often mixed with buffalograss and other prairie grasses in native turf seed mixes like Thunderturf and Habiturf. It can also be used on its own as an accent in perennial borders.
Watering once a month is generally sufficient in summer. It can be mowed once or twice a year at the highest setting — 4 inches minimum — but mowing frequently will tend to weaken it and allow other grasses to invade.
