Full sun. Deciduous, with coarse leaves. White flowers appear in warm weather. Calling this plant a butterfly magnet is an understatement — in summer it attracts endless swarms of pollinators with a gentle vanilla/almond fragrance that can suffuse the whole block. The name “incense bush” is well-earned.
Almond verbena is upright and fast-growing. For a native shrub version, try Aloysia gratissima (whitebrush).
Occasional pruning; it can be grown as a large bush or, on its own, a small tree. Some landscapers restart it from the ground every winter to control its size.
