What you need to know about SAWS Project Lead

Protecting your drinking water quality is always a top priority.

As your municipally owned water utility, SAWS makes your health and safety a top priority. That’s why SAWS is inspecting service lines to identify possible lead or galvanized pipes.

SAWS Project Lead is a public health and safety program designed to meet new standards set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The service line is the pipe that connects your home or business to the drinking water system. And while SAWS keeps very good records about its pipes, the lines on your private property may not be documented.

Starting in October, SAWS will mail letters to every customer whose service line materials are either unknown or known to present a risk of possible lead exposure. (They’ll receive an email too if we have their address.)

If your service line is already determined to be lead-free — or if your house was built after 1989 when lead lines were banned in new construction — you will not receive a letter or email.

If your home was built before 1989, register online at saws.org/lead to determine if you’re eligible for a free inspection. Eligible customers will be contacted to schedule inspection service and sent additional documents to fill out.

Additionally, you or a licensed plumber can conduct the inspection process and submit required documentation to SAWS. Right now, the only way to determine the unknown materials is to physically inspect each service line.
