San Antonio is all aflutter with monarch butterflies, now migrating over Texas en route to Mexico to roost for the winter. Come celebrate this fantastic flight this weekend!
Monarch butterflies are making their way through Texas en route to Mexico to roost for the winter — and this is the peak week to spot them in San Antonio.
The Texas Butterfly Ranch is celebrating this fantastic flutter with the 2017 Butterfly and Pollinator Festival . This year’s theme: “Butterflies without Borders.”
As part of the weekend celebration, the Gardening Volunteers of South Texas are offering an interactive butterfly garden training program (pdf) at the Pearl Studio, 200 E. Grayson.
There are three one-hour sessions available Oct. 22:
11 a.m.-noon
11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
1:30-2:30 p.m.
The seminar will focus on the importance of the monarch butterfly, plants that provide the best nectar or larvae food sources, and a step-by-step instructions to plant a monarch garden.
Following the presentation, participants will create their own butterfly garden using magnetic boards with templates of multiple garden shapes with magnetic plant pictures.
