Yaupon Holly (Dwarf)

Ilex vomitoria 'Nana'

About This Plant

Sun/part shade; evergreen, with a low, mounding form up to 4 feet. All dwarf yaupon cultivars are male — so they don’t bear red fruit like the full-size parent. Dwarf yaupon naturally forms the kind of perfect green “meatball” popular in manicured landscapes — though yaupons are so heavily sheared (as topiary) that their natural form is rarely seen.

Origins: Cultivar

Maintenance

Pruning is always optional. Make shearing cuts in late spring before the year’s new foliage hardens off. Renewal pruning to open up older specimens can be performed in winter — a good idea if hedges become so dense they’re showing dead and diseased spots.

A dwarf yaupon for low hedges and topiary.
