Understory shade or sun. Evergreen, with compound leaves and crinkled, glossy leaflets smelling intensely of citrus or rue. Torchwood is densely branched and hedge-like, providing an attractive, drought-hardy selection where an evergreen shrub is needed. The wood ignites easily, hence the name. Black fruits appear in autumn.
Torchwoods are not widely available; find them at specialty native nurseries, including in Austin and South Texas.
