Red Yucca

Hesperaloe parviflora

Red-flowered False Yucca; Samandoque; False Yucca

About This Plant

Sun or partial shade. Evergreen and architectural, with mounds of soft, narrow leaves. Spikes of red (or yellow) flowers appear in summer and reach 4′-6′ in height. Extremely drought-tolerant. Not a true yucca, despite its name and form; red yucca is more closely related to agaves.

Origins: Chihuahuan Desert of Texas and Mexico

Maintenance

Generally maintenance-free if given sufficient space. The woody flower stalks can be snipped back to the ground after blooming, especially if they’re dangling into pathways.

A thornless architectural evergreen, and a stalwart in the hummingbird garden.
