Gray Shrub Sage

Salvia chamaedryoides

Salvia, Gray Shrub Sage, Mexican Blue Sage, Blue Oak Sage, Germander Sage

About This Plant

A low, mounding evergreen salvia with woody stems and aromatic greyish foliage. Sky-blue flowers appear as early as February and may last all season long. Native to the high mountains of the Sierra Madre Oriental, blue sage tolerates drought like a champ and rarely dies from it. However, it can be a bit fussy in protracted wet weather and may be easily over-watered, especially in poorly drained clay during a South Texas winter.

Origins: Chihuahua, Mexico

Maintenance

Trim as needed to maintain a tidy shape, or let this salvia sprawl freely in the mixed border. It may spread a bit by rootstock in perfect conditions.
