Gaura

Oenothera lindheimeri

Butterfly Gaura, White Guara, Lindheimer's Beeblossom

About This Plant

Sun/part shade. Gaura is an herbaceous perennial wildflower, growing in a spreading vaselike clump. White flowers with long stamens bloom in loose clusters, eventually fading to pink. These rise above the foliage on long stems, trembling in the slightest breezes. “Whirling Butterflies,” a popular cultivar, describes the effect. Use it in the back of a sunny perennial border where it may sprawl freely.

Origins: Louisiana and Texas

Maintenance

None required; clumps can be cut in half during summer to encourage a second bloom in autumn. Gaura can self-sow or become weedy in some settings.

Lovely pink and white flower spikes in both native and hybrid varieties.
