Crinum Lily

Crinum spp.

Cemetery Lily, Milk-and-Wine Lily

About This Plant

Bright light; for a better-looking plant, protect from western summer sun. Crinum is a tropical evergreen, with big, sloppy mounds of cascading succulent foliage and prominent red-white-and pink striped lily flowers in warm weather. The best-adapted lily for Central Texas, it endures without any supplemental water, and can be found thriving in abandoned homesteads and cemeteries. Huge underground storage bulbs enable it to survive in between rains. It is said that no crinum has ever died! Many varieties are available.

Origins: South Africa

Maintenance

Grooming. May shrivel a bit in summer scorch and freezes back in winter, but the root is extremely hardy. In general, burnt foliage can be trimmed off to keep it tidy.
