Butterfly Iris

Dietes grandiflora

Dietes, Butterfly Iris

About This Plant

Sun/part shade; sword-like foliage growing in spreading clumps. The winged blossoms are intricately patterned in white, purple and yellow.

Like bicolor iris and a few other South African plants, butterfly iris is lush, hardy and low-maintenance. It can be cut back freely as needed. It grows large enough to hide AC condensers.

The leaves are wider than the leaves of the similar bicolor iris. Both species are used for massing in commercial landscapes too dry or sunny for lilyturf and liriope.

Origins: South Africa

Maintenance

Water; can be pruned occasionally by pinching or cutting back to remove spent foliage or encourage flowering. Clumps can be divided easily.
