Christmas cactus

Pick up this beauty to add the best holiday pizzazz to your home décor.

With twinkly lights and jingly bells, it’s hard for plants to compete for attention during winter holidays. But there’s one plant that takes its 15 minutes of fame and puts on the best show during December: Christmas cactus.

This beauty is native to South America, where it grows on mossy trees and in rock crevices filled with decaying vegetation. In our area, Christmas cactus thrives in pots or hanging baskets outdoors in the shade. When the weather cools, it prefers to be inside near a window with bright, indirect light.

Christmas cactus is an evergreen, low-water succulent with unique flat segmented leaves. The leaves grow in strands until early December — and that’s when the magic begins!

Instead of leaves, little buds begin to form blooms at the ends of the leaf strands. They can be red, pink, white, orange or purple. The whole plant is covered in blooms at various stages and when those blooms are completely open, they steal the show from any other holiday decorations!

Christmas cactus will live for years when cared for properly and can get to be two feet wide in just a few short years. They’re easily found at local nurseries and even our local grocery stores.
